Festive Holiday Gifts on Melrose – Part 1

Festive Holiday Gifts on Melrose – Part 1

Looking for the perfect holiday gift? It seems there’s no better place to find a special present than Melrose Avenue.

Flasher

At Flasher, manager Scott Watson says his store’s most popular holiday items include customized denim vests. “All of them are one-of-a-kind, hand-painted and studded. We also carry the Italian line, Happiness. We’re definitely one of the more eccentric stores on the street.” Other popular brands include Black Pyramid, Chris Brown’s clothing line, and the French street clothing of Black Caviar. And how about his Gucci-inspired ugly Christmas sweaters? Of course there’s a wide range of gift-worthy selections available “Honestly everything in our store right now is a holiday item. Wearing some of them is like wearing a Christmas tree,” he laughs.

American Vintage

For another take on ugly holiday sweaters, Katherine Lebesma, manager of American Vintage, says her shop has a stellar supply that make enjoyable gifts. “Most of what we have here is secondhand, so we have unusual things that have actually been knitted by someone, or someone has added ornaments to them to make them even more ugly. People have been really fighting over those,” she says. Among the most unique items her shop carries are the shop’s new designer clothing. “The company’s designer has started creating using our vintage clothing and recycling classics. Those have been popular as gifts, in part because each product is so special.”

IIJIN

From quilted jackets to faux fur skirts, there’s something to gift every fashion-conscious guy or girl at IIJIN. Men will love the red and black tailored suit jacket, while women will find the stretch-leather dress a must-have.

But, speaking for manager Emily Becker, sales associate Britten Andrews says the shop’s most popular gift items are shoes. “Especially our classic high top sneakers,” Andrews notes. “Our shoes have a built-in wedge – that’s one of the things people like about them.”

New Profanity

For what may be the most outrageous gifts in Los Angeles, New Profanity offers the last, sometimes profane, always fun, word. From stocking stuffers to clothing, owner Natasha Polhamus makes sure her store is well-stocked with items that live up to the shop’s “unique, fun, and unapologetic” slogan.

“Everything in our store is made by artists. Our cards are really original and they’ve been really popular for the holidays. So have the enamel pens…they’re the perfect gift,” Polhamus attests. “One of our most popular items are the butt pillows –  they’re literally just pillows with butts on them. We actually have Christmas-themed butt pillows right now.”

According to Polhamus, “Really you can get something that suits someone’s personality and it’s only $10. We have lots of ornaments, some are just funny and some are kind of profane. We have lots of fun tags to put on gifts, and jewelry which is good for dressing up.” The shop’s enamel heart-shaped pins, for example, say words such as “Feminist,” “Bitchy,” and the more scatological. Don’t miss the cactus thong.
