Restaurant Romance on Melrose Avenue for Valentine’s Day

Looking for a romantic spot to dine on Valentine’s Day? Melrose Avenue restaurants offer a delicious way to play Cupid.

Wolf

At Wolf a $95, five-course, pre-fixe menu is offered by Chef Marcel Vigneron. The sleek, contemporary space offers seatings from 6 to 10 p.m. Start with the Baby Peach Bellini, a bubbly introduction to a starter of oyster on the half-shell, followed by a – pun intended – “Heart Beet” salad with lobster, winter citrus, fennel, avocado, nasturtium, and ruby red pomegranate. Next up, Amatriciana pasta made with pancetta and anchovy. The restaurant’s signature hanger steak is the main course, finished with truffle butter. Dessert? Banana cake with cherry ice cream and chocolate ganache. Diners can add a wine pairing for $35.

Antonio’s

Classic Mexican dishes are a given at this traditional and tasty dining spot. Add one – or several – of the restaurant’s hundreds of tequilas, and enjoy a Valentine’s menu that includes dishes such as beef tamales, Chiles en Nogada, and Spare Ribs en Chipotle. Each guest will receive holiday “goodies and cards,” according to owner Antonio Gutiérrez, from adorable stuffed toys to heart- shaped lollipops. But that’s not all – it’s time to “vamp it up” for Valentine’s Day. The restaurant is showcasing two burlesque shows at 7 and 9 p.m for a $10 per person cover charge. The shows will take place in Antonio’s Cathedral Room, hosted by Vixen de Ville featuring The Dollface Dames.

Maison Richard

At Maison Richard Restaurant & French Bakery, it’s a feast for Francophiles from 6 to 9 p.m. Owner Hugette Coffyn offers a $58 prix-fixe menu that includes a special gift for diners: a single rose per couple along with a “tiny bag of chocolate truffles,” and a strawberry Love Kir. The menu itself includes what the restaurant terms “Aphrodisiac soup,” a house-made ginger and carrot, followed by a choice of black and white steak au poivre; a “Valentine Linguine” with shrimp and creamy tomato; or a “Double Honey” warm honey goat cheese on brioche with ratatouille. The main course is followed by a mini cheese plate and dessert – a raspberry heart Auteuil chocolate truffle.

Spartina

A four course menu is also the order of the day at Spartina, where the $65 tasting menu includes a glass of Prosecco. With a wide range of choices for every course, the menu is as diverse as it is delicious. The meal starts with an appetizer for the table including a choice of marinated gigante beans, spaghetti pie, or pappa al pomodoro; followed by a variety of antipasti choices including grilled avocado with Moroccan lemon and ricotta salata, fried calamari salad, or polenta with red grapes. The first course choices range from lasagne with spinach and artichoke hearts to short rib in tortelloni, or cannelloni with chicken and black truffle cheese. For the secondi, choices include grilled tuna steak, seasonal grilled and roasted vegetables, branzino, or a wood grilled prime sirloin. And of course, there’s dolce – with choices such as mascarpone and vanilla panna cotta or bongo ciocollato with chocolate sobretto and chocolate sauce.

Maré

At Mare, diners can relax al fresco with seafood and candle light. Chef de Cuisine Sean Carlson explains his special menu for Valentine’s Day as a “lovers feast of six courses for two people for $100. We’ve done a few feasts over the year, at Christmas, in the fall, and spring,” he relates. “For our first course, we have crudo of yellowtail with pickled strawberries, sunchoke and mint. I’m a big fan.” The second course: bone marrow and salt cod risotto with celery root and pickled golden raisins, followed by a “signature dish” for the third course, “shellfish bowls with a special broth. We are doing a carrot broth for the holiday with a choice of mussels, clams, or shrimp, served with globe carrots, carrot chips, and grapefruit. I’m excited to try that myself,” he laughs. Fourth course: a halibut cheek with chorizo and white bean stew which Carlson terms “our take on a ‘panade.’” The main course is a roasted leg of lamb with sour cherry marmalade and a warm farro salad. “For dessert we’re doing a torte galicia with apricot jam and amaretto,” a stellar take on almond cake. “It should be a lot of fun. And we offer each dish a la carte, as well.”
