What Is A Piroloâs Panino? Melrose Avenueâs Answer To The Ultimate Sandwich
Piroloâs Panino is the ultimate sandwich spot. The perfect fast-casual dining venue for succulent sandwiches, to-go orders, and delivery, Chef Michael Pirolo is sating appetites with the same style he sports at his upscale South Beach spot in Miami. There, his sophisticated restaurant Macchialina received a semi-finalist spot in the James Beard awards; here, Piroloâs Panino serves up delicious sandwiches, plates, small bites, and dessert that can be consumed anywhere, including in-store at comfortable plank tables. So, what are you dining on? Well, starters include cheese puffs, airy ricotta and mozzarella fritters served with house marinara. The puffs can also be made into a panini for a yummy vegetarian sandwich. Either way, theyâre essentially a delicately crisp take on mozzarella sticks. Other starters include beef and pork meatballs and buffalo chicken wings served with homemade blue cheese and celery. The chefâs menu encourages diners to âeat your greensâ and with a simple Caesar Salad that includes sundried tomatoes, or a chefâs salad that mixes salami, provolone, olives, and crispy chickpeas in a house vinaigrette, it would be hard to refuse. But then we come to the sandwiches, which are the heart and soul of the menu. The classic Chicken Parm […]
Juice Butchers: Get Juicy
Juice bars and life in Los Angeles seem to go hand in hand these days, and Melrose Ave. has just welcomed the newest juicy arrival: Juice Butchers. Juice Butchers calls itself a neighborhood juice bar, and the spot prides itself on making â100% fresh, raw, vegan, organic, cold-pressed juiceâ according to staff. The idea behind Juice Butchers is that juice doesnât need to be expensive or pretentious, and to that end, prices are reasonable, staff are friendly, and the shop is bright and fresh, open daily from 9 to 7. Thereâs a pretty outside patio with green tables; inside thereâs a cool minimalist mural of a butcher on the wall, sleek dark wood community counters, metal stools. The overall look is light and airy, the vibe is friendly, almost like an old-fashioned soda fountain. You could hang out here, or get your juice and other good-for-you snacks on the go. The menu includes juice, smoothies, wellness shots, tonics, and food items such as an acai bowl and a Chipotle Wrap. While juices are the main focus of the menu â as they should be – the acai bowl is a beautiful one, and decked out with pears, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, […]
Stuffâd Dumpling: Ready To Get Stuffed?
Stuff’d Dumpling is just two months old, but already this bright and airy Melrose eatery is getting patrons delightfully stuffed themselves. The chef-made dumplings are gluten-free, made with organic and locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible, and embody the very essence of comfort food. Founding partner Liza Tevelev says her love of dumplings started when she was a child. âI grew up eating and making these dumplings my whole life. I was born in Russia, and when I moved to L.A. I would make and eat them with my friends, and people really seemed to enjoy them.â Tevelev and her business partner Matt Cooper decided to leave the world of finance and create their own take on delicious dumplings. âI had a food blog and worked in a food start-up at one point, so this was kind of a natural progression,â she notes. This is Tevelevâs first restaurant, although her executive chef Missy Kim previously served the same role at CafĂŠ Stella, worked as private chef for LCD Sound System, and as talent agent Ari Emanuelâs private chef. âMatt and Missy added their own take on dumplings, and the concept developed from there. From my idea, they brought in flavors that were […]
Blackbird Fly â to Blackbird Pizza on Melrose Ave.
Blackbird Pizza is absolutely the pizza shop of the moment on Melrose Ave. Offering thin-crust and deep-dish, this casual, bright, modern pizzeria ends the debate about which is style of pizza pie is best: here, they are both pretty terrific. With spare bare-wood tables, a window counter for people-watching, and fun graphics on the wall, this is a small but cool looking spot, and makes a good place to settle in and relax over a pizza and a beer. In fact, the beer menu is even more extensive than the spotâs choice of pizzas. Youâll also find meatball options (no vegan, at least not yet), and other fine snacks. Owner and chef Luis Ulloa has created dining venues in New York and San Francisco; in the latter location he assisted with the well-regarded Little Star Pizza. Perhaps that was the link to his latest venture, but regardless of its origin, Melrose Ave., and Los Angeles itself is grateful for the chance to put to rest â or put to a tie â the deep dish/thin crust debate. Before tackling that one, itâs well-worth noting that Blackbird also soars with the âsnacksâ section of its menu, such as a local burrata […]
John Kolaski, Michael Pirolo And Giancarlo Pagani Launch Pirolo’s Panino On Melrose
After several successful pop-ups in Miami, hospitality veteran John Kolaski partnered with Michael Pirolo (James Beard Award Semi-Finalist) and Giancarlo Pagani (of Pagani Projects) to bring renowned Italian sandwich shop, Piroloâs Panino, to Melrose Avenue. The official grand opening for Piroloâs Panino takes place Tuesday, April 24 at 7461 Melrose Ave., in the space formerly occupied by Greenspanâs Grilled Cheese. Pirolo’s will offer limited seating as its main focus is take-out and delivery. Piroloâs Panino will deliver throughout West Hollywood, while private cloud kitchens will extend delivery-only options throughout Downtown, Hollywood and Central Los Angeles.  âAfter opening more than 60 venues over the past decade, Iâve seen firsthand how guests have evolved beyond the restaurants of the past. We expect culinary thoughtfulness and creativity anywhere we enjoy a glass of wine, a meal or a snack,â said John Kolaski, Founder, CEO and Curator of K2 Restaurants. â…Iâve brought together a group of creative and curious people to build distinctive gastronomic experiences in restaurants and other unexpected places.â Piroloâs combines bold, authentic flavors with thoughtfully-sourced ingredients to create exceptional American-Italian classics. Focused on great tasting signature sandwiches, Piroloâs will also feature a selection of Chef favorites including salads, plates, sides and desserts. Signature paninos will include […]
Japanâs #1 Resale Retailer, 2nd Street, Opens Its First American Store On Melrose
2nd Street Melrose is FINALLY open, and a welcome addition to the shopping districtâs family of stores. The fashion-forward second-hand clothing retailer opened its first location in North America on Melrose, and has already established itself as a go-to for both bargain lovers and trendsetters. With almost 600 locations in Japan, 2nd Street is one of that countryâs leading reuse businesses. The stores there refurbish and resell everything from baby goods to electronics, and is a popular family shopping option. 2nd Street is everywhere in Japan. Both Ms. Nakamura and Mr. Seiya Magori worked on the retail side of the company in Japan before moving to Los Angeles to open the Melrose store. It was a massive financial and geographical leap for the overseas company to consider launching in the U.S. Why Los Angeles, and why Melrose? San Francisco, New York, and Chicago were considered, but L.A. had the preferred fashion sense. âTrendy is very important,â suggested Ms. Nakamura. âPeople really enjoy fashion here, many styles.â Added Mr. Magori, âMelrose is very popular in Japan. I visited here 15 years ago, and I liked Melrose culture.â Prior to the physical opening, 2nd Street opened a vibrant, ever-expanding (1000s of items) […]
