Beyond Christmas: Celebrate December’s Other Holidays On Melrose Avenue

You might be under the impression that Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa are the only holiday games in town in December, and you would be incorrect. The month-end ones get all the press, but there are equally excellent opportunities to celebrate with food, fantasy, and fun all month long! There’s a Melrose Avenue business perfect for whichever off-center holiday sounds good to you.

COOKIE DAY – DECEMBER 5

Like cookies need their own holiday. But we’ll take it! Chef Josette’s cookie game is on point, especially this time of year. You can go traditional, with a delicious chocolate chip or maybe something with peanut butter, OR, get festive with holiday favorites like a sweetly-decorated gingerbread man or deceptively decadent jam-filled butter cookie topped with powdered sugar.

INTERNATIONAL NINJA DAY – DECEMBER 5

Espionage. Sabotage. Warfare. Ninjas were the most covert of covert agents tasked with dirty deeds. Stay out of jail when observing Ninja Day with a non-lethal toy set. The Office Ninja Blowgun set from Puzzle Zoo is perfect for “disarming” whatever keeps you bound to the desk: your computer, the multi-line phone, or Brenda the office manager.

PRETEND TO BE A TIME TRAVELER DAY – DECEMBER 8

There is so much history to be found in hats. So, if you’re going to pretend to be a time traveler this month, one simple way to transport yourself is with a classic head-topper. The straw boater was popular in the late 19th century, the pork pie made famous in the jazz era, and the linen newsboy common in the early 20th century. Enjoy the trip!

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE – DECEMBER 9

Across the world, those special, wonderful people who take care of animals will be honored this month. Since 1971, Dr. Edd Jordan and his terrific staff have been providing care on Melrose (and in homes) all day, every day. From preventative to emergency care, Dr. Jordan services all  furry, finny, and feathery friends with love. Today is a good day to say thanks for that.

PASTRY DAY – DECEMBER 9

Like cookies, we’re not convinced pastries need a “day” because there is every day, but because La Chouquette exists, we’ll take it! A chouquette is a crispy, pearl sugar-topped piece of pastry, a dune is a chouquette filled with whipped cream (!), and an éclair is miracle and you can get all three here (any day).

WORLD CANDLELIGHT DAY – DECEMBER 10

Candlelight is romantic. It’s relaxing. It’s super helpful when DWP needs 14 hours to get your electricity back on. Why not intentionally go dark this month and light up your space with pop culture prayer candles from New Profanity? From song goddesses like Selena and Diana Ross to TV icons like Spock and freaking Jordan Catalano, you’ll love these in the light as well.

ICE CREAM DAY – DECEMBER 13

Again, this doesn’t need a day. Just think of it as a reminder, a motivator if you will, to GO GET ICE CREAM! Luckily the best IC treat in L.A. is on Melrose, at Cold Rolled. Watch your personally-chosen (from many IC flavors, drizzles, and toppings) made-to-order delight made right in front of you (with your dang name wrapped up in the roll!).

CHOCOLATE COVERED EVERYTHING DAY – DECEMBER 16

E-VERY-THING! This is a no-brainer. Get to Winchell’s. Here are all the things covered in chocolate: twists, raised rings, old fashioneds, mini white cakes and chocolate cakes, buttermilk bars, French donuts, donut holes. Is that enough? No. You can drink it, too, poured into a Chocolate Chilla or Chocolate Licuado. EVERYTHING!

BACON DAY – DECEMBER 30

There’s no in between: you’re either a bacon lover or a very sad person. Bacon lovers know the unmatched delish of cured pork, and now you’ll find it in everything from soap to cologne. At Blu Jam, you’ll find it in omelettes, scrambles, benedicts, burgers, and sandwiches. The crispy smoked bacon is so great, just get it on the side and end this year with a happy tummy.
