Essex: Graphic Tshirts and Women’s Dresses

Essex is a one-of-a-kind Melrose Ave. shop, featuring graphic T’s, sexy dresses, unusual jewelry, and band shirts. The shop is well known for its wide selection of high quality, super soft shirts with unusual graphics and tributes to favorite bands.

According to owner Saad Sazegar, “We sell graphic T-shirts and band shirts that you just can’t find anywhere else. We have collections for both men and women.”

Sazegar has been in business for eleven years, and credits his success to a number of different factors: his shop’s unique clothing line, fun displays, and of course, friendly customer service. “All of these elements combined draw people into our shop,” he relates. “And, once you come in, you’ll fall in love with this store. You’ll know why we stand out from the rest.”

The small shop is packed with unusual items. The men’s and women’s jewelry Essex carries are varied and exciting, and as special as its large T-shirt selection. “Overall, it’s just fun fashion jewelry of all kinds, rings, necklaces, bracelets. We sell a lot of statement necklaces, pieces that have precious stones like agate and druzy quartz. Many of our rings also feature unusual stones.”

Indeed, from layered bib necklaces to more delicate styles that feature colorful beads and mosaic-like patterns, or a single, stunning green crystal on a gold chain, neckwear is a standout at Essex.  Their collection of rings is also noteworthy, many large and featuring chunky slices of agate, amethyst, rose quartz, or other raw-cut gem stones. Bracelets run the gamut from simple bands, to thick cuff-like pieces that include gem stones.

Many shoppers come for the store’s prime collection of dresses. From A-lines to flared skirts, dresses are primarily imported and “fun, sexy going-out styles,” Sazegar says. Patterned, plain, and a rainbow of colors await shoppers. Whether bright colors or that perfect little black dress is what you’re looking for, Sazegar has a trendy look to fit the bill.

But as attractive as the women’s dresses are, it’s the T-shirts that may be the biggest draw at Essex. “We are a hidden gem. We’re self-proclaimed the best T-shirt shop in all of Los Angeles,” Sazegar jokes. But turning serious, he adds “We have over a thousand different graphic tees in here.”

The shop primarily carries black, grey, and white shirts with an amazing range of patterns, for guys, gals and kids. Whether it’s a lightening bolt, a skull pattern, music notes, white doves, or a cool print that reads “City of Angels,” there’s something to suit just about anyone in a store where most buyers seem to purchase multiple shirts. It’s not all T-shirts, either: women’s shirts include tank tops and racer back shirts among other designs.

The store carries many shirts created by emerging designers, making it easy to find shirts that are special, rather than cookie-cutter patterns that could be purchased at any department or sports store. The band shirts are abundant too, shoppers would be hard pressed not to find a favorite musical act in the store’s collection.

Sazegar buys both nationally and internationally, too, adding to the many different styles and designs available. But the key appeal for each of these shirts, beyond the variety of graphics, is how soft they are – no rough cotton here.

From comfy tees to dresses for a night on the town, there’s plenty of fashion appeal and signature style at Essex.

Essex is located at 7425 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046
