Here in L.A., we’re all about health and fitness. We wear shorts eleven months out of the year. Raw food and smoothies are a way of life. We Spartan race, mud run, midnight hike, surf, and skate. We like to look good and most importantly, feel good.
Melrose might be known for shopping and culture, but it also offers many ways to find the mind-body connection, from cardio conditioning and strength training to muscle toning and flexibility.
On the corner of Melrose and Gardner is a bright yellow building with a giant painted tiger crawling up the side. That’s Tiger Boxing Gym, and what goes on inside is no joke. If you’ve watched even one boxing match (OK, fine, even one “Rocky” movie), you know the sport is as much about discipline and mindset as it is brute strength. Olympic fighter Charles “Young Dick Tiger” Nwokolo brings competition-level experience to training, but adjusts all sessions to fit your personal goals. Women, teens, and children are equally encouraged to train at Tiger. Individual sessions are $60 with packages and daily/monthly open gym memberships available.

The Kardashians. Josh and Fergie. LisaRaye McCoy. Travis Barker. David Boreanaz. Bodies you know, bodies you envy. All those tights abs and glorious glutes are thanks to a proprietary program developed by celebrity fitness trainer Don “DB Donamatrix” Brooks. The Matrix Method is informed by DB’s years as a pro athlete and coach, and includes combo moves that hit particular muscle groups as well as all-out full-body blasts. It’s the kind of workout you might not know how you’re going to finish, but you will, and it will feel better than just about anything else you’ll do all week. 45-minute sessions are offered twice daily Monday through Friday, and once on Saturday and Sunday, for $25.
