Melrose Avenue is the place to go when you want to experience something eclectic, something original or something you didn’t know you wanted until you discovered it. In fact, sometimes you come across food that you start to crave as soon as you taste it. At L’Assiette (“the dish” in French), this experience can be had every time you walk in. As soon as you step through the door, you’re reminded of why eating in West Hollywood is so fun. The service is top notch, yet entertaining, the ambiance is classic yet artsy and the same thing can be said for the patrons. It’s a great mix of cool and classy.
The mahogany panels serve to highlight the old-school nature of the restaurant, while the service reminds you that you’re in modern day Melrose – full of life and character. The real attraction is the steak and frites. We’re not talking ordinary steak with ordinary fries, there’s an art to making this french classic. The secret is in the sumptuous steak sauce and the way the fries are perfectly seasoned and cut. There’s a lot to be said when a restaurant specializes narrowly the way L’Assiette does. By specializing in only one cut, the coulotte steak (sirloin cap), they’ve perfected the texture, while creating a sauce whose main purpose is to enhance the flavor of the steak. The sous vide (under vacuum) cooking method is used to tenderize the ultra-lean cut of steak that is then grilled to create the outer texture.
Let’s not forget that this is LA where there will be people in your group who see fries as the end of any healthy diet. Be assured that you can call on their menu to provide fewer carbs, or none at all. The same expertise that creates tender meat for the Steak and Frites also goes into the salad. For those that do not eat steak, you can have Poisson Frites or the vegetarian version called the Portobello Frites. Being in West Hollywood late at night during the week is the best time to go. They’re open late most nights. Don’t forget to try the cheese plate.
L’Assiette Steak Frites is the brain child of Owner/Chef Jacques Fiorentino. He moved from France to Florida in the early ‘70s, dedicating his career to the restaurant business starting with a postion as the maître d’ of Clearwater Beach Yacht Club’s restaurant La Grenouille. Fiorentino is no stranger to Hollywood though, he sold his first script for the sitcom, Mork & Mindy starring the newly discovered Robin Williams. He’s had a healthy writing career, working for Barney Miller, M*A*S*H, and Taxi among others. He went on to create and produce the highly acclaimed Comic Relief for HBO. Fiorentino introduced L’Assiette Steak Frites to the vibrant culinary corridor of Melrose Avenue in the heart of Hollywood in Spring 2014 with son Marc Fiorentino, and Managing Partner Mary Anne Reyes.
