New Art Alert: Open Up Instagram And Get Out To Melrose Avenue

One of the best free public art galleries is Melrose Avenue. Street creators from all over the world showcase their talent on walls, doors, windows, and sidewalks, creating a wonderland of colorful, meaningful art.

Here are some new, must-see pieces to check out and share online.

GZ.JR LAKERS @ 7769 MELROSE

How’s this for a welcome mat! Venice-based artist Gustavo Zermeno in collab with Sportie LA painted this amazing tribute to iconic Lakers including Shaq, Kareem, and Wilt to show newbie King James the legacy he has joined. Not only does it include the team’s past and present homes, but it shows plenty of the hard-earned gold. This piece is quite an achievement itself.

JAZZ GUETTA JUMPMAN @ MELROSE & SPAULDING

As long as we’re on basketball, we can’t forget one of the greatest and this cool mural of #23 from JazzGuetta won’t let us. In that trademark multi-colored scribble line art, Jazz is masterful at bringing movement into his work. This is not his first on Melrose, and we’ll enjoy this incredible piece until the next one.

HASHIM LAFOND LeBRON @ MELROSE & VISTA

Hashim Lafond has done it again! This time he honors our new Laker, LeBron James, with this passionate depiction on the wall of Fampion X. Notice the black jersey? Lafond is waiting to fill it in until after James’ first game. So you’ll just have to come back to Melrose once the season starts to snap the completed piece.

TAYLOR HILL #IAMMELROSE @ MELROSE & MARTEL

In celebration of its ten years of wellness service to the community, Koreatown Collective commissioned this dope CA license plate mural from artist Taylor Hill. In addition to being super colorful and demanding of attention, it initiates a hashtag to get behind. When you visit Melrose, this is definitely a memory pic to take.

JIMMY PAINTZ SMILEYS @ MELROSE & CURSON

Well, this is pure joy! Los Angeles-based good vibes artist Jimmy Paintz took the iconic smiley face and used it to create a wall that sends happy energy out onto Melrose. When life seems like its whole goal is to be a jerk, seeing a bunch of smiles is an easy reminder that there’s good out there in the world. And a lot of it on Melrose.

JASON NAYLOR LOVE @ 7769 MELROSE

While we’re on positive vibes, let’s add some love to the mix. Brooklyn-based artist Jason Naylor made his west coast debut with this beautiful, soaring piece dedicated to our most basic human connector. If you’re going to leave your mark on Melrose for the first time, this is the way to do it!

HIJACK TETHERBALL @ MELROSE & OGDEN

Scoping a HiJack is like finding a four-leaf clover. He travels around the world, stealthily stenciling attention- and thought-provoking work in surprising places.  When one shows up on Melrose, it’s time to get the cameras out. This delightful piece uses the static features of the wall to bring to life the joy of kids at play.

ALEX ALI GONZALEZ OL BLUE EYES @ MELROSE & ALTA VISTA

This is the perfect mural for Frankie’s, an authentic NY-style Italian restaurant that harkens back to the days when the Rat Pack inspired entertainment and classy cocktail lifestyles. Alex Ali Gonzalez beautifully captured those piercing eyes which are going to live on Frankie’s wall for a long time, inviting people inside to step inside for a taste of that good life.
