Spartina LA: So, You’re Addicted to Pasta

So, you’re addicted to pasta– it’s ok. The first step is admitting you have a problem. The good news is, there’s help. I have personally struggled with a pasta addiction all my life. I remember a time when my father found me freebasing cold, sauce-less penne into my mouth out of a strainer in the kitchen (I was seven, and they were dark times). I’ve grown a lot since then, and I’m here to impart that wisdom upon you.

The best pasta on Melrose is served at chef and culinary wizard Stephen Kalt’s Spartina. The original Spartina opened in New York and was named top 5 on Food & Wines neighborhood restaurants. They mix rustic decor and place settings with fine dining cuisine. The pasta is made in-house, so it has the consistency of an angel’s wing, and the menu is ever changing to support the use of local in-season ingredients. I suggest going on Mondays as they have happy hour all night with pasta at $15 dollars and wines for $8. Because pasta is meant to be eaten with wine, or beer, or soda—or maybe it’s just meant to be eaten, period.

The short rib tortelloni with brown butter and sage has got to be the first thing you order. The salt of the short rib and the sweetness of the brown butter will make you melt. Spartina is the perfect place to go on a date, because after you eat this food, whoever’s sitting across from you is going to start to look a whole lot better. It’s like beer goggles, but with pasta.

For my vegetarian and vegan friends, I wish I was as strong as you and I applaud you for your life choices. The vegetarian garlic spagettini is truly addiction triggering. It’s made with black and white garlic and can be served with or without the cheese, although I highly suggest eating it with the pecorino it’s topped with, because it is scientifically proven that cheese makes everything better. The black garlic has been fermented, so it has some sweetness, while the white garlic is shaved thinly, so it won’t hit you over the head like garlic bread would. The dish’s flavors are balanced along with Calabria chili oil, so the garlic won’t inhibit you from kissing your attractive waiter who you will undoubtedly fall in love with.

If you’re a seafood pasta kind of gal (or guy), I get it! The rigatoni sicilliano will change your life. They start with rigatoni, add in-house pesto from white beans and pistachios and chop fresh shrimp and parmesan. Get it once and it will quickly become your go-to order.

It doesn’t hurt that Spartina is an Instagramer’s dream. They have indoor and outdoor seating and are accommodating of large parties. With a patio that’s lit like your wealthy cousin’s wedding in Napa, it’s perfect for posting pictures of your pasta that you can look back on and enjoy for years to come.
