The Parlor on Melrose Ave.is a true neighborhood spot, featuring high-end American cuisine, craft cocktails, good brews, and sports. Opened in 2010 as a sports bar, co-owner Ajay Relan re-branded the space last July.
Chef Ulysses Pineda designed an upgraded, locally-sourced menu, and the tavern’s cocktail menu was created by Oakason Hoffman, a renowned mixologist at the SLS Hotel. A big beautiful patio is replete with misting fans and a retractable awning for hot days and three fire pits for cooler nights.
The appealing menu adds to the ambience. “Our food was always good but when we updated last year, we wanted to make our food great. It’s classic American comfort food with an emphasis on the highest quality ingredients and tastes. We offer some vegetarian options, and have created a handful of very unique dishes among our offerings,” Relan smiles.
Among them: the Brussels Caesar Salad, featuring shaved Brussels Sprouts and creamy house-made Caesar dressing and a signature dessert, a funnel cake.
“We call it the County Fair Style Funnel Cake à la mode,” Relan asserts. “It’s made with powdered sugar and preserved berries. For some old school nostalgia, we use classic Thrifty ice cream.”
From fresh ceviche to margarita pizza and skinny fries – there’s something to please everyone. The Parlor’s weekend brunch menu adds delicious dishes like a veggie frittata and a soft-scrambled egg breakfast croissant.
Revamped and reinvigorated, The Parlor is the perfect spot for people to gather and socialize, and with 50 televisions, it’s a hot-spot to catch all your favorite games.
“Sports fans are our bread and butter,” Relan notes, “and there’s always plenty to watch. We’ve just added more to our mix.”
Recently, The Parlor opened for lunch daily at 11 a.m., and the convivial spot also offers a weekday happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m. There’s high speed wi-fi, too, for customers who want to work. “We welcome that,” Relan says.
And, for the summer months, this comfortable hang-out features several balmy-weather treats. Wednesdays are known as Rosé Wednesdays, when the gastropub offers a bottle of high quality rosé for just $30 with the purchase of an appetizer, all night long. Summertime Fridays mean more fun: there’s an all-day happy hour from opening to 7 p.m.
“Many businesses in the area have half-days on Fridays, so the extended happy hour pricing fits that schedule,” Relan remarks.
The Parlor was Relan’s first foray into the dining scene, but his background in the entertainment industry serves him in good stead – there’s plenty of entertainment to be had here.
All year long, along with the viewing of major sporting events, The Parlor serves up other fun. Mondays there’s a comedy show hosted by Jay Davis, while Tuesdays are for trivia games hosted by Big Happy. On many Thursdays, patrons can eat, drink, and paint when the tavern becomes an artistic hot spot at Paint Night events. Relan also plans to get a live music program.
Weekdays, local businesses can enjoy another perk: bring in a business card, and lunch is discounted by 10%.
“The definition of a parlor is ‘a room set aside in the home for guests,’” Relan says. “We’ve created an atmosphere where our patrons can relax in a casual, comfortable setting, and enjoy delicious food with great service. We want to cater to our neighborhood, and make The Parlor a hub for community-driven events.”
Speaking of community, a benevolent project Relan spearheaded out of his own home kitchen 3 ½ years ago has expanded to make The Parlor into a flagship for his “#Hashtag Lunch Bag” movement. Shared on social media, this project now takes place in 140 cities worldwide, preparing and delivering meals to hungry folks. “On the last Sunday of every month we have 100 to 150 people here preparing 1500 or more meals. People then caravan to distribute the food downtown. It’s a party-like vibe for a good cause,” Relan notes.
